Seville Things to Do – The Real Alcazar, Plazas, Flamenco and More

From the beaches in Barcelona, the tapas in Granada, and the mountains in Sierra Nevada, there are so many incredible and unique things to do in Spain, and right near the top of the list is Seville.  Seville is an absolutely wonderful city that is full of enough sites and adventure to keep you busy for weeks! We put together a list of the best things to do in Seville, Spain.

In Seville you will have a truly authentic Spanish experience that you will not forget. From the Real Alcazar to the incredible Plaza de Espana and Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, we will see it all.

Whether you are planning a European honeymoon or dreaming up a bucket list trip, we are here to help! Let’s go!

Seville (Sevilla in Spanish) is the capital of Spain’s Andalusia province, in the Southwest of Spain. The city is a masterpiece to explore, with monuments and sites all over the city. To help you out on your own adventure, here’s our favorite unique things to do in Seville.

Things to do in Seville

Plaza de Espana

The Plaza de Espana is located in the heart of Seville, and it truly is the center of this beautiful city. We recommend you put this at the top of your must-dos in Seville.

The Plaza de Espana is ENORMOUS, so you’ll want to give yourself at least an hour or two to explore the grounds.

When we were there, we saw an impromptu Flamenco show, a guy making HUGE bubbles near the fountain, and a bunch of tourists struggling to steer their boats around the moat surrounding the plaza. There will be no shortage of things to do!

What’s more? The Plaza de Espana walls show a history of Seville and Spain as a whole, and the building is still in use by the government. The Plaza de Espana has historical significance that is still in the making!

Walking Around Plaza de Espana – So Much Symmetry

Real Alcazar

The Real Alcazar has been featured on Game of Thrones, which had Zach hook-line-and-sinker from the start. Here’s a mistake we made that you should not make: we underestimated the SIZE of this place.

The Real Alcazar will command an entire day to see it all, and you’d better wear some walking shoes. Let’s just say you’ll meet your steps goal for the week.

And bring a camera. Bring the best one you have (here is ours). Around every corner is a wonderful world that is just as breathtaking as the last.

If you have engagement pictures, wedding pictures, heck even Christmas Card pictures at ANY TIME near your trip to the Real Alcazar, you should SERIOUSLY consider making this the location of the photo shoot. Infinite options and backdrops you will not find anywhere else on earth!

Pro tip: get to the Real Alcazar as early in the day as possible. Not only is this good because you’ll spend more time there, but there can be quite a line that forms throughout the mid-morning. Double win if you get there early!

The Real Alcazar Seville was our favorite stop in the entire city. We found it to be one of the most unique things we did in all of Europe, and was absolutely worth the entrance fee and short wait in line. Make sure the Real Alcazar is on your Seville itinerary!

Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza

Stop number 3 on our list of things to do in Seville is another plaza: Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. This is a stadium for bullfighting, one of the oldest traditions in Seville!

To be honest, we weren’t planning on going to the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza (sometimes shortened to the name Maestranza) on our trip to Seville, but once we walked by we knew we had to go in. The Plaza de Toros is a stunning piece of Spanish architecture, both outside and inside.

And not only was the Plaza de Toros building beautiful, but we got a guided tour that taught us about the history of bull fighting in Spain and Seville. It was a fascinating tour, and we learned a ton of interesting historical tidbits.

However, we’re not sure we could stomach seeing an actual bull fight. Unless it is something like the one we recreated in the center of the ring. Either way, we recommend making the Plaza de Toros a stop on your Seville itinerary!

Food

Seville, like Granada, is known for Tapas, and they live up to the billing. Our strategy was to explore the city on foot, and if we found a restaurant that looked good, we’d stop and take a peek at the menu. If it looked good and was priced right, we’d either keep it in mind for later or have a quick bite right then and there!

Another strategy we used in Seville was to make a picnic and eat in the park. The city has a variety of stunning parks, including the Plaza de Espana, which offer a beautiful setting for a picnic.

We picked up some bread, sliced meat, and cheese from a local deli (my GOODNESS the fresh baked bread makes these sandwiches SO delicious) and had a feast! What is the best part? The sandwiches were delicious and only cost around $5 total! Great way to cut costs while traveling.

Where to Stay in Seville

We found an Airbnb in the center of town that was fantastic, and to be honest there were a few other options that seemed to be just as great on Airbnb. We basically used our place as a bed, shower, and as a place to keep our bags, so we didn’t need anything special.

Seville is too much fun to explore to hang out in the hotel, so don’t splurge on an expensive place to stay!

And there you have it, all of our recommendations on how to experience Seville in all its glory. We hope you enjoyed reading about our list of things to do in Seville!

Walk Through Seville

The Real Alcazar, Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, and Plaza de Espana are only separated by about a mile or two. Pair that with beautiful cobblestone streets pockmarked with beautiful cafes and restaurants and what do you get? A city that is perfect for walking! Here is the route we took to all 3:

We must have taken 20,000 steps per day in Seville, and we enjoyed every single one. We especially loved strolling down the Canal de Alfonso XIII that cuts through the heart of the city.

Tip: We found that most of the beautiful monuments and sights were on the East side of the Canal that cuts through Seville, so do your best to stay on that side.

Flamenco Dances

Seville is known as being one of the birthplaces of Flamenco, and oh boy does it live up to its billing. Flamenco dancing is EVERYWHERE in the city, whether an impromptu show or some fantastic dinner entertainment.

We stumbled across a few Flamenco performances in progress on our walks and we were fascinated. We would love to learn so we can jump in on the show next time!
