About Us

We are mostly known for…

Making people laugh (or at least trying to…) while sharing travel secrets and recommendations as we tell our story!

We created Ruhls of the Road 3 years ago to share our lives and hopefully inspire others to travel and live their dreams by sharing travel tips that allowed us to travel and destination guides to our favorite places! We quickly figured out that our favorite way to travel was by getting outdoors, hiking new trails and camping near hidden gems. National Parks, National Forests and off the grid places were our jam!

Since adding a baby girl to our family we’ve started sharing how to travel with a baby. If we had a dollar for every time someone told us we’d have to settle down once our baby arrived we’d be able to afford a pretty nice vacation. Now we show others that travel is still doable after having kids and give them tips for how to fit their newest addition into their adventurous lifestyle.

The things in life we are most passionate about are…

Travel

We first found out each other had a passion for travel when we started dating, and set off on our first trip together to sunny San Diego after only dating for a few short weeks. Everything started off great with a delayed flight and lost baggage (the only reason Zach has broken Julie’s terrible overpacking habits and convinced her to become a backpacker gal) but we bonded the rest of the time over sunsets, bike rides, seafood and strong coffee. We were quickly hooked to the feeling of exploring a new place and found ourselves planning our next trip before returning home from the last.

At the end of 2018, we packed everything we owned (after selling most of it…) and moved into a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan and made the road our home!

Family

In 2021 we added a beautiful baby girl to our small family and have been adjusting to parenting ever since. She certainly keeps life fun and exciting and she’s the absolute best travel buddy. It’s been a crazy ride but one we wouldn’t change for the world.

We spend every day we can with our families on both sides! Zach comes from a HUGE Minnesota family, 6 boys and a girl (the youngest, of course). A family that loves football, giant vats of chili, and above all competition. Julie comes form a nuclear close-knit Wisconsin family that also loves football, but pairs it with fishing and exploration!

Each Other

As Zach’s Mom tells his sister (in reference to her new boyfriend) it is okay to be excited about each other’s bodies! And the Ruhls of the Road creators love each other like monkeys love bananas. Waking up every day together is like Christmas morning, except that instead of presents Zach usually gets yelled at for making the bed with the grace of a hungover elephant.

Most Days You Can Find Us…

Working behind our computers in a new place and chasing our baby girl around making sure she doesn’t seriously hurt herself. If we could we would be double fisting cheese and chocolate with a coffee on the way at all times!

On Saturday’s we’re typically out exploring a new hike, camping in the woods or finding a hidden beach. We love Sunday snuggles with our baby girl, who is quite the traveling baby herself!

Zach has his Bachelor’s in Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an MBA From the Kellogg School of Management. Julie has her Bachelor’s in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s in Nursing from University of Illinois Chicago. We are passionate about SO many different things, but reading, learning, and experiencing new things are all near the top of the list

We love serving the world by…

Creating travel tips, destination recommendations, and heartfelt stories that we share with the world for free!

When we are not creating travel content, you can find us…

Doing anything and everything outdoors. Running, biking, hiking, you can do all of these no matter where you find yourself!

And occasionally getting up to our eyeballs in a good TV binge, or elbow deep in a good book (more so before adding baby Indie)! We are always listening to podcasts, whether right away in the morning or to help us fall asleep.
