Maui Itinerary – 4 Days Discovering Paradise

Welcome to the tropical paradise of Maui, Hawaii, where vibrant landscapes, cultural richness, and adventure converge to create an unforgettable experience. This Maui itinerary of 4 days explores the must-see attractions and exhilarating activities that will make your Maui vacation a truly magical journey.

Is 4 days enough in Maui? While 4 days in Maui won’t allow you to see everything this Hawaiian island has to offer, it will allow you to get a good introduction and see the top sites. Maui is absolutely a bucket list destination full of incredible waterfalls, hikes, beaches and more.

After multiple visits, we’ve definitely figured out our favorite things to do on this island and we are packing only the best things to do into this Maui 4 day itinerary.

Where to Stay in Maui

Our Favorite

Papakea Resort: This is our absolute favorite place to stay on Maui and we stay here every trip, as long as there is availability. We love it for a few reasons. First, it is between Lahaina and Kapalua which are two of our favorite areas to explore. Second, it is affordable. Third, and probably the biggest reason is its proximity to the ocean.

Papakea is directly on the ocean and you are literally steps from the ocean. Definitely book an oceanfront room if your budget allows. The sound of the ocean crashing from your lanai is the cherry on top of your Maui vacation.

Ka’anapali

The Whaler on Ka’anapali Beach: A great hotel if you want to be right on Ka’anapali Beach, which is a happening beach right by many famous luaus, Lahaina town and where many excursions leave from.

Wailea

Grand Wailea Maui: If most of the things you are planning to do in Maui are on the east side of the island it makes sense to stay over there in Wailea or Kihei. It’s right next to a premiere golf course and has amazing pools to relax by during your vacation.

Day 1: Exploring the Road to Hana

We are kicking off our Maui itinerary of 4 days with a bang!

A beautiful cascading waterfall you can hike to on Maui's Road to Hana.
Don’t miss the road side Maui waterfalls while driving the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a winding, scenic masterpiece that promises an unforgettable journey through the lush heart of the Hawaiian landscape. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty, this iconic road trip spans approximately 52 miles along the northeastern coast, boasting over 600 curves and crossing nearly 60 bridges.

The road is a gateway to many natural wonders, including Twin Falls, Waikamoi Ridge Trail, the town of Hana, a Red Sand Beach, Wai’anapanapa State Park, and the legendary Seven Sacred Pools in Ohe’o Gulch, just to name a few.

There are so many wonderful stops along the Road to Hana it can get overwhelming. It will be best to plan ahead or purchase the Shaka Guide which is an audio guide that will allow you to do a self guided Road to Hana tour. The Shaka Guide tells you exactly what you will see at each stop and when to pull over to park. It will make your first day in Maui a breeze.

We’ve done the Road to Hana a few times and used the Shaka Guide every time. However there are many companies that offer Road to Hana tours if you rather leave the driving to someone else.

IMPORTANT: You will want to get an early start, as this is a full day activity. Plan to be on the Road to Hana by 6:00/6:30am to beat the rush and be able to enjoy your day without loads of traffic.

That’s a wrap of day 1 of our 4 days in Maui.

Day 2: Haleakalā Sunrise, Waihe’e Trail and Luau

Day 2 of your 4 days in Maui is full of mountain top views. Prepare for an early morning as you venture to the summit of Haleakalā, Maui’s dormant volcano, for a sunrise experience that is nothing short of magical. Then you’ll do the best hike on Maui before getting dressed up for dinner and a luau.

Pre-dawn: Haleakalā National Park

Bundle up and drive to Haleakalā National Park, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds. The ever-changing colors of the sky and the panoramic views of the crater make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Make sure you check what time sunrise is and plan to be at the top of the volcano at least 15 minutes before to grab a seat for the best sunrise of your life.

You NEED a reservation to drive to the top of Haleakalā for sunrise. These go on sale 2 days in advance at 7am HST. Make sure you are signed in to your recreations.gov account before 7am and you’re ready to purchase them as the clock ticks 7! They sell out within seconds. Reservations are $1 per vehicle.

However, you will also need to purchase an entry into the National Park. If you completed the Road to Hana yesterday and entered Haleakalā National Park you will already have this.

It is chilly at the top of the volcano at 10,000 ft. We meant it when we said to bundle up or bring blankets to snuggle in.

Morning: Makawoa and Breakfast

After sunrise, drive back down Haleakala. On your drive you’ll come to the cute town of Makawoa, nestled in the upcountry of Maui. This quaint town preserves its rich heritage through its rustic architecture, art galleries, and boutiques. Makawao’s laid-back atmosphere and artistic spirit attract visitors seeking a genuine taste of Maui’s cultural tapestry.

Spend your morning exploring Makawoa and shopping around its streets. Grab some breakfast and coffee. You’ll need it after your early morning. We love grabbing sweet pastries from Komoda Store and Bakery.

Afternoon: Waihe’e Ridge Trail

After your morning adventure, take a leisurely drive to the Waihe’e Ridge Trail. This moderately challenging hike offers panoramic views of the West Maui Mountains and the coastline. The lush, green landscape and refreshing breezes make it a perfect way to connect with nature.

Waihe’e Ridge Trail is by far the best hike on Maui and is a must on your Maui itinerary of 4 days. While it’s a challenging climb, the views are absolutely worth it.

We suggest packing a picnic lunch and enjoying it at the top of Waihe’e Ridge while enjoying the spectacular views.

Experiencing a luau in Maui is an absolute must for an authentic and enriching Hawaiian cultural immersion. These festive gatherings showcase the islands’ history through captivating hula dances, traditional music, and storytelling.

Indulge in a sumptuous feast featuring local delicacies and roasted pig, served amidst a breathtaking sunset backdrop. Luau celebrations foster a deep connection to Hawaii’s Polynesian roots, providing visitors with a genuine understanding of the island’s vibrant heritage.

The Nakalele Blow Hole is one of Maui’s best highlight for its dramatic and unique display of nature’s power. This blowhole sends plumes of seawater skyward, creating a mesmerizing site.

It’s a short, but rocky hike down to the blowhole. Once you’re there, you can watch the blowhole up close. Some blows are small, but some are tall and powerful. Enjoy this opportunity to explore the island’s diverse and picturesque coastal scenery. It’s an essential stop for any Maui adventurer.

After snorkeling and/or cliff jumping, enjoy some time soaking up the sun on the beach.
