Nestled on Maui’s northwest coast, Honolua Bay is a true gem for snorkelers seeking a tranquil and secluded experience. The bay is part of the Honolua-Mokule’ia Marine Life Conservation District, ensuring the preservation of its vibrant marine ecosystem.

Honolua Bay is actually a frequent stop for guided snorkeling adventures, so you know it is good.

While swimming around here, we saw 3 Green Sea Turtles hanging out munching on some coral, AND all the fish you could spot! And because you are not on a guided tour, you have no time limit!

Take your time swimming around, spend some time resting on the beach, and then go out snorkeling again. The world is your oyster!

Black Rock: Where History Meets Underwater Beauty

Located along the iconic Ka’anapali Beach, Black Rock is not only a historical and cultural landmark but also a fantastic snorkeling destination for beginners. According to Hawaiian legend, Black Rock is the place where spirits leap into the afterlife.

For snorkelers, it’s a gateway to an underwater world filled with sea turtles, colorful coral, and schools of tropical fish. The gently sloping beach and easily accessible entry points make Black Rock suitable for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Black Rock is home to NOT ONLY one of the best Maui snorkeling spot for beginners with Sea Turtles and fish, but also an incredible cliff jumping spot! If you are an adrenaline junkie, this is definitely the Maui snorkel spot for you!

There is a spot along the rock that you can hike to and leap off into the beautiful blue water of the Pacific Ocean! The jump is about 25-30 feet, we didn’t measure it but it sure felt about that high!

When you are done snorkeling and cliff jumping, you can head back to the beach and find some shade to have a few beers or a Mai Tai and relax for the afternoon! Sit back and look back at the awesome adventure you just had in Ka’anapali and enjoy the sea and sun on Maui!

Molokini Crater: A Spectacular Marine Sanctuary

For a truly unforgettable Maui snorkel experience, venture off the coast of Maui to Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped islet and a marine sanctuary. Molokini Crater is right up near the top of the most beautiful places to snorkel in the world.

Why? I’m glad you asked! The partially submerged volcanic crater is home to an abundance of marine life, including rare coral species and a variety of tropical fish. The crater blocks the wind and waves so you get to snorkel in calm water. The main reason it is one of the best Maui snorkeling spots for beginners.

So, when you snorkel out at Molokini Crater, you will be able to see anything and everything in the ocean around you. We saw a bunch of brightly colored fish swimming around, a few sea turtles here and there, and Zach even spotted an eel on the ocean floor!

The only negative about this Maui snorkel spot is you have to take a tour to get to Molokini. We toured with Pride of Maui and loved our experience.

Pu’unoa Beach: A Peaceful Retreat for Underwater Exploration

Pu’unoa Beach, also known as Baby Beach, stands out as an exceptional snorkel spot for beginners on Maui. Nestled along the island’s quiet west side, this spot offers a calm setting for new snorkelers.

One of Pu’unoa Beach’s most notable attributes is its shallow and calm waters. The gentle slope of the sandy ocean floor allows novice snorkelers to comfortably wade into the sea. This provides a stress-free entry point for those just starting to snorkel.

The absence of strong currents enhances the overall safety of the experience, making it an ideal destination for families and individuals eager to explore Maui’s underwater wonders at their own pace.

The marine life at Pu’unoa Beach adds another layer of attraction for beginners. The clear, shallow waters reveal tropical fish and vibrant coral formations. Snorkelers are likely to encounter a variety of reef inhabitants, from schools of playful fish to gracefully gliding sea turtles.

In addition to its beginner-friendly attributes, Pu’unoa Beach offers a tranquil and picturesque setting. When you need a break from snorkeling, relax on this beautiful beach and take it all its beauty.

Olowalu: Discover the Magic of Maui’s Coral Gardens

Olowalu, nestled between Lahaina and Ma’alaea on the western coast of Maui, emerges as a superb snorkel spot, especially well-suited for beginners. This location boasts multiple attributes that make it one of the best Maui snorkeling spots for beginners.

One of Olowalu’s key features is its Coral Gardens, a mesmerizing underwater landscape full of vibrant marine life. The shallow and easily accessible waters make it a perfect playground for novice snorkelers. The calm conditions allow beginners to comfortably explore the coral formations, without the challenges of strong currents or deep waters.

The abundance of marine life at Olowalu further enhances its appeal for beginners. Colorful tropical fish dart in and out of the coral. Additionally, Olowalu is frequented by the gentle and graceful green sea turtles, providing beginners with the opportunity to encounter these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Best Snorkel Gear

Thankfully, the gear needed to snorkel is pretty minimal. To try snorkeling all you really need is a snorkel, mask and fins. Also if you are snorkeling anywhere in Hawaii it is required to use reef safe sunscreen to help preserve the coral reef.

Optional

A life jacket may help you feel more comfortable in the water. This is a great life jacket for travel!  Use a waterproof camera like the GoPro HERO12 to capture your experience and any marine life you see while snorkeling. Lastly, you may want a dry bag for your belongings, especially if you’re going on a Maui snorkel tour.

Don’t be fooled and buy mask defogger. All you have to do is spit on the inside of your mask and rub it on the lens. This is weird, but trust me, it works like a charm.
