You could go on an awesome adventure to Asia or Europe, or you can explore all of the wonders in North America. In this article we are sharing with you the 10 best budget honeymoon destinations in North America, from Canada all the way down to Belize! Are you ready? Let’s get to it!
Caye Caulker, Belize
Suggested by: Erika from Erika’s Travelventures
Caye Caulker, a small island off the coast of Belize, is the perfect budget honeymoon destination. It is a beach destination that’s cheap and easy to get to, with a laid-back vibe perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun with your partner.
Belize is often overlooked as a honeymoon destination because of its close proximity to Mexico and the other Caribbean island destinations. However Belize’s waters are just as beautiful and very budget-friendly.
Belize is a convenient and cheap honeymoon destination for American travelers, not just because it is so close geographically. Belize was a former English colony so most locals can speak English, and the currency is $2 Belize dollars = $1 USD, so many touristy locations will accept USD for payment.
The best thing to do on Caye Caulker is to visit the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world. For $20 USD per person you can go on a half-day tour to go snorkeling in different locations around the island, or spend $40 USD on a full-day snorkeling tour. Adventurous couples can also go scuba diving here, either to the Belize Barrier Reef or to the famous Blue Hole.
A perfect free activity on Caye Caulker is to chill at “the Split” which is where a narrow water channel cuts the island in two. A large pier extends in to the water here, and there are plenty of lounge chairs and even cabanas to rent together so you can spend the entire day being lazy. A bar & grill nearby will supply you with rum punches and Belizean cuisine like lobster, jerk chicken, ceviche, and more. Expect to pay from $2-$5 USD for a filling meal, and no more than $10 USD for a plate of fresh lobster!
Cozumel, Mexico
Suggested by: Viki from Chronic Wanderlust
Cozumel has always been dear to my heart ever since I spent some weeks helping out at a dive shop there. It is the one place I’ve come back to on a regular basis and it was also the first overseas trip I took with my husband. We’ve been back to Cozumel together a couple of times and we decided to spend our honeymoon there!
We are both scuba divers and Cozumel is a true heaven for underwater junkies! Not only do they have some of the most beautiful coral gardens around the island, but also is the diving relatively inexpensive compared to many other prime dive locations.
Two tank dives cost $88 USD and packages for several days will get those costs down even more. We’ve been diving with Blue Magic Scuba for years and it’s the place we recommend the most. If you are trying to stay in a certain budget and don’t want to be spending too much money, then avoid the peak season when prices can skyrocket.
Other than scuba diving, you can rent a car to explore the small island, hang out at a beach club (Paradise Beach is only $3 USD entrance fee) or try to find all the colorful street art in San Miguel.
Costa Rica
Suggested by: Oksana & Max from Drink Tea & Travel
No matter what type of honeymoon you are looking for, Costa Rica has it all. From luxurious resorts and stunning beaches to adventure activities, romantic sunsets, and magical rainforests. You can spend as much or as little as you want on a Costa Rican honeymoon however despite the first impressions, it can be a budget friendly honeymoon destination.
Most activities in Costa Rica, like hiking, swimming, sunbathing, surfing, or snorkeling are free or next to free. Costa Rica is known for its beautiful sunsets and enjoying one on a beach with your partner is one of the most romantic things you can do, and it doesn’t cost a penny!
Costa Rica is also an ideal honeymoon destination for an eco-conscious couple, as many hotels and tour activities around the county employ locals, are located in natural areas, and are environmentally conscious about their practices. One thing Costa Rica does well is eco-friendly accommodation. And our personal favorite is the Drift Away Eco Lodge, a beautiful and affordable eco-lodge with lots of nearby activities in Playa Avellanas. It makes for the perfect honeymoon hotel that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
The bulk of your honeymoon budget will go towards accommodation. Expect to spend $60-100 USD/night for a hotel room in touristy areas. However, that number can triple if you want to stay in luxury hotels.
Pre-packaged vacations and all inclusive resorts can be helpful to try and set a more fixed cost for your budget honeymoon. However, independent travel to Costa Rica will give you total freedom over the budget, pace, and activities you and your partner would like to experience on your Costa Rican honeymoon.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Suggested by: Ketki of Dotted Globe
When it comes to the USA, no other honeymoon destination is as fun or as romantic as Las Vegas. The city is made for love. From exploring Las Vegas strip attractions to taking a day trip in the Nevada desert, Las Vegas promises plenty of opportunities to enjoy each other’s company.
However, the best part about Las Vegas is that it is a great budget honeymoon destination. Apart from the many free attractions, Las Vegas has cheap airfare, car rental deals, and low rates at casinos when you book in advance. Consider the Luxor or the Excalibur to stay within budget. Both of these casinos are located close to the major Las Vegas attractions and have great ambiance.
While in Las Vegas, you should spend most of your time on the Las Vegas Strip. The official name of this road is Las Vegas Blvd and this is where the most popular casinos are located. The best things to do on Las Vegas Strip for couples include seeing the Bellagio Fountains at night, taking a ride up the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, and going on a gondola ride in the Venetian. For outdoor attractions, rent a car and spend a day at the beautiful valley of Fire State Park in Nevada and see Hoover Dam on your way back. Death Valley National Park is also a great day trip from Las Vegas, and is home to some of the best hiking and exploring in the US.
Yosemite National Park, California
Suggested by: Jenny from Campsite Vibes
Yosemite is a romantic honeymoon destination during any season and an affordable option for adventurous couples. The National Park charges at $35/vehicle entrance fee, so if you are planning to visit more than 3 days, consider buying the America the Beautiful pass which is $80 and covers all National Park entrance fees for 1 calendar year.
This park is absolutely packed with free activities. Enjoy some of the best hiking in North America, take a walk to enjoy nature and fresh air, or enjoy a scenic drive through the park, all for less than a penny!
In the winter the whole park turns into a winter wonderland, where the granite walls that surround the valley are dusted with snow and glow in the morning sunrise. If you do visit in Winter, try snowshoeing or backcountry skiing and explore Yosemite in a coat of fresh powder.
In the spring months, the valley is bursting with vibrant green colors, wildflowers, and raging waterfalls. Don’t miss the chance to hike the Mist Trail and get sprayed with water from Vernal Falls and Upper Nevada Falls.
In the summer months, the road to Tuolumne Meadows opens and gives you access to the full park to enjoy backpacking and hiking. Yosemite in the summer is peak season so make sure to make camping or hotel reservations well in advance.
In the fall, the valley gets covered in beautiful yellow and orange tones and the crowds begin to disappear. Camping in the park is usually around $25 per night, and you can make a great dinner over a campfire. There are also tent cabins that run at a higher price which varies based on the season.
There are two hotels inside the park, the Yosemite Valley Lodge and the Ahwahnee Hotel. As with any place, expect to pay higher prices in peak season. Don’t be afraid to adventure outside of the park to find additional accommodation options that might be more budget friendly. The best part, hiking around the park is free!
Moab, Utah
Suggested by: Meg from Fox in the Forest
You can have an an adventurous and cheap honeymoon in Moab, Utah. Head to the adventure capitol of the western USA with an unforgettable, budget-friendly honeymoon in Moab, Utah. Outdoor adventure enthusiasts will love the endless opportunities for a romantic adventure. Situated in the stunning desert landscape of southern Utah, Moab is an adventure town like no other.
Head out on a sunrise hike at one of Moab’s most scenic hiking trails for a tranquil and romantic experience right in the heart of the desert. Bonus points: many of Moab’s hikes and views are free!
With an America the Beautiful Parks Pass, you can enjoy endless trips to either Canyonlands or Arches National Park and save oodles of money. Alternatively, you can spend the day biking along the beautiful canyon rim at Dead Horse Point State Park (entry fee is only $20 USD for the day).
Rock climbing enthusiasts will love the world-class rock at nearby Indian Creek or go for a guided adventure right in the heart of Moab at Ice Cream Parlor Wall. Sport climbers should bring their climbing gear and check out the several awesome routes along Wall Street.
If you’re visiting in the spring, you can opt to go on a white water rafting adventure for a little cool off. Rafting is a budget-friendly, high adrenaline activity suitable for anyone who wants to make a splash.
Moab is a mecca for 4WD and off-road driving enthusiasts. Take your Jeep on one of the many 4-wheeling roads throughout the area (entry is free). However, you can camp at one of the many first-come-first-serve campgrounds for as little as $10 a day. Sleep under the stars for a romantic camping getaway, then stop by and stay in town for a night or two. Food is generally inexpensive and Moab is a rather laid back place, making it the perfect budget-friendly honeymoon destination for those who love the outdoors.
Yucatan, Mexico
Suggested by: Claudia from My Adventures Across the World
Yucatan is the most popular destination in Mexico, and for a good reason. Imagine a place with incredibly beautiful beaches, marine life, lush vegetation, archaeological sites and stunning attractions. Then add in delicious food. Put this together with the incredible value for money and voilà! You’ve got the Yucatan!
It’s easy to see why people love it and why it is a perfect place for a honeymoon and – in fact – a very budget friendly honeymoon at that.
Favorite activities in Yucatan include exploring the myriad archaeological sites: Chichen Itza is an obvious choice, along with Uxmal. If you want a more unique archaeological experience, visit Coba. Coba is a much wider side, and the only place where you will still be allowed to climb a pyramid.
Cenotes, which are underground freshwater lakes, are unique to this part of the world and an obvious attraction, not to mention very budget friendly to get to. Go for a beautiful swim in a cenote with your new spouse!
For a 100% free activity, head to one of the beautiful beaches, my favorites being in Tulum. Though most are attached to local businesses such as restaurants and hotels, there are some that are free to access and where you can spend your day basking in the sun.
There are many fancy restaurants in Yucatan, and especially in the Riviera Maya. But if you want to truly taste Mexico, opt for street food. Many tacos carts will serve food prepared to order and full of flavor, and a taco costs less than a dollar. You can literally feast on them!
Florida Keys
Suggested by: Ruhls of the Road
The Florida Keys is an absolutely stunning destinations that is a perfect spot for a budget honeymoon. First off, let’s talk about why the Florida Keys are a perfect destination.
The tropical waters of the Florida Keys are as beautiful as anywhere in the world. On top of the waters, literally, are the incredibly long bridges that span the Keys, on which you can drive. The longest of these is SEVEN MILES! You will literally drive seven miles above the beautiful blue-green waters of South Florida.
You can also have TONS of adventure in the Florida Keys. In Key Largo, there are tons of snorkel and scuba excursions that will take you to unique and stunning underwater sites. In Key West, the main destination in the Keys, you can do a fun jet-ski adventure or a romantic sunset ocean cruise. Duval Street is packed FULL of things to do, and the island is full of history (including the first ever international flight!).
Okay, so the Florida Keys are great, but we are looking for budget honeymoon destinations, right? Right! The Florida Keys is exactly that, a cheap honeymoon destination that won’t break the bank! The incredible beaches won’t cost a penny, and the food (especially from food stands and food trucks) is very reasonable.
Banff National Park
Suggested by: Ruhls of the Road
Banff National Park is one of the most beautiful and adventurous places in the World. Not just in Canada. Not just in North America. In the WORLD! Banff is a treasure trove of incredible sites, photo opportunities, hikes, and fun activities for you and your new spouse to enjoy.
In Banff, you of course have to visit the incomparable lakes: Lake Louis and Moraine Lake. These two are best seen at sunrise, and to get there (and get a parking spot) you’ll have to wake up nice and early. Check with a ranger when you get into town to see when the parking lot is filling up at that point. The early rooster call is SO SO worth it though. The views of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise at sunrise are as close to a perfect view as you can get. This will be a very romantic and beautiful experience.
There are also a ton of hiking opportunities throughout Banff National Park. The Big Beehive/Little Beehive/Plain of 6 Glaciers Loop was a wonderful hike. So was the Lake Agnes Tea House hike, which was shorter but still beautiful. If you aren’t a hiker, then there is a gondola to ride up Sulphur Mountain which gives a stunning 360 degree panorama of the Banff Area.
Banff National Park can be spendy, however if you know where to look there are great deals around every corner, and you can visit this stunning wonderland without breaking the bank. Camping in Banff is less than $30 USD per night, and you can even camp for free in many places if you have a campervan.
You can also find budget hotels in Banff or Canmore depending on the season. You can have a beautiful budget honeymoon in Banff National Park, seeing some of the world’s most stunning landscapes while also keeping a tight budget!
Kelowna
Suggested by: Ruhls of the Road
Kelowna, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, is a hidden gem. We had never heard of this winery wonderland until we were driving through, and we had the time of our lives exploring this area! There were so many fun things to do, fresh fruit, delicious wine, and beautiful sites to see.
First off, the wineries. Kelowna is home to tons of unique and delicious wineries for you to visit. This place is like Napa Valley, only cheaper! Our personal favorite was Off The Grid Winery, a place that was, as the name suggests, off the grid! They used solar power, well-water, and had a small goat farm, all of which subsisted on everything made right on the land! It was so unique, and a pleasure to explore.
On top of the wineries, the Okanagan Valley is beautiful. Okanagan Lake is a huge, stunning blue lake, which makes for a great background in photos. At the south end of the lake is the Picton Canal, which floats to Skaha Lake. You can rent (or buy) a floaty for about $20 USD and float down the canal, which is the PERFECT cheap honeymoon activity on a hot day. You and your new spouse can get a bottle of wine, float down the canal in the summer sun, and just enjoy being in each other’s company.
Visiting Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley is very reasonable. This is an excellent budget honeymoon destination in North America. Many wineries offer free tastings, floating the Penticton Canal is free with a floaty, and all of the hikes in the area are free! There are many budget hotels and lodgings on Airbnb you could book, in addition to many campsites if you love the outdoors.
North America is absolutely FULL of fun and exciting budget honeymoon destinations. You can explore the tropical Caribbean, adventure in the stunning Rocky Mountains, and see beautiful sites everywhere in between. We love this place, and find a new place to explore around every corner.
